Oral Cancer Screening
At Jeff M. Morrison and Associates, we are dedicated to your overall health, not just your smile. For this reason, we conduct an oral cancer screening as part of our regular comprehensive exam. Like any kind of cancer, oral cancer can be life threatening. Oral cancer begins with an asymptomatic stage during which the usual cancer signs may not be readily noticeable. This makes the screening Dr. Morrison performs critically important. If detected and treated early, oral cancer has a cure rate of 80-90%. More people are being diagnosed with oral cancer than ever before. and its also being found in a younger population of men and women due to their exposure to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV virus can spread by intimate contact, including kissing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all patients over the age of 17 years be screened annually for oral cancer.
As part of your comprehensive exam, Dr. Morrison will examine your entire oral cavity, including the tongue, throat, lips, and gums to detect cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. He will also feel the tissues of your mouth and throat to detect any abnormalities. If an area of concern is identified, Dr. Morrison will recommend treatment or refer you to a specialist for further care. If you have questions about oral cancer screening, have noticed a change in your mouth or throat, or want to discuss ways to minimize your risk factors, call our office today and schedule an appointment.
